Manifest against waste

Once with the melting of the snow, the grounds have once again stepped on the limelight, showing their true faces. With the day by day rays of sunshine, our environment is exposed more and more to the infection with the notorious “virus” known as pollution. This 2012`s beginning of the spring has brought back our Acacia trees and snowdrops, but once with them it has revealed that our Earth is suffering. By a bird’s eye view, our Earth seems ok, but the reality is that this is just a mask. The Earth is in pain.

As out motto, we choose “Lumea simte, vrea fapte nu cuvinte” (“The world feels, it wants deeds, not words”) which  is a well known lyric sung by a famous  Romanian rapper, Guess Who, and it represents our plan to solve this problem.

This essay is going to be a manifest against prodigality, precisely garbage squandering. Let`s start by defining what a household waste is. A household waste refers to any object that people throw away as it is not needed anymore.

According to Wikipedia -http://ro.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reciclarea_%C3%AEn_Rom%C3%A2nia-, the recycling target of Romania is 38% in 2009, 42% in 2010 and 46% in 2011. Even though it is a small number compared to other European countries, it doesn`t change the fact that it matters. It is a good piece of news that the percentage is increasing.

Garbage by itself is not something to worry about as it is a natural thing we can`t avoid in our daily life, but it can become a knotty problem when it is not handled the right way. It doesn`t take a labor of Hercules to think for a jiffy about the environment. A bad workman (always) blames his tools. When are we going to stop searching for excuses and blame each other? Are we prepared to make a change? Are we mature enough to understand the needs of Mother Earth?

So what could be the “medicine” to this syndrome? What is the field to this question? There is a clear-cut solution. It is thought that verbalizing is the first step to prevent pollution, that by informing people, more and more of them will actually acknowledge the problem and change their perspectives. But that`s not enough. Let`s be honest. Without trying to be negativistic, people nowadays, an alarming number of the 21st century citizens stopped caring. This era of speed makes us forget, sometimes with free will, sometimes without intention, to have concern for other than ourselves.

The solution is to stop making so many different activities and just concentrate on one big global action, a hive of activity where everyone around the world will participate. Of course, as nothing comes for free, we will pay the price of taking risks such as language barriers, but if we start to find holes in everything where will it all lead to?

Art is the most profound expression of human creativity and also a form of knowledge. As a figure of speech, art is food for our souls. As rational as some of us can be, art is something we all sometimes need in order to get rid of our daily stress, it represents a method that helps us preserve, enjoy and improve our spiritual life. On the other hand, even though it is a natural thing in our daily life that we all deal with, we believe that  garbage “helps” us destroy our environment and once with it, ourselves. But what if we can merge this two in order to create benefits for both our souls and bodies? What if instead of just throwing away dozens of cans, paper or plastic, we can transform them into something unique?

As simply as that. All we need is a flash of genius, a flash of inspiration to turn an old, bruised CD into a Christmas tree decoration. It`s a matter of creativity, a leap of imagination that can prove that recycling is a need, a solution to the environment pollution. As we know there are still countries that cannot cope with recycling, so what is the best way to help it if not through art?

According to a survey organized by The Romanian Team in charge of The Global Event of The Earth Hour -http://www.orapamantului.ro-, 91% of Romanian compatriots voted that they will participate in the action of switching off the light on 31st March, between 20:30 and 21:30, in order to participate at the global event of Earth Hour. Such a high percentage gives us hope for the best and shows us that people  are willing to get involved into this matter in order to make Earth a better place. Following the principle of imitation, there is a chance that people will actually influence each other for the better.

So let`s not hold our breath and have faith in useless promises, but instead, let`s fill the void of promises with concrete actions and make a difference. Let`s erase our name as the WTF (Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook) generation. We are the leaders of the new school! We are the youth, the 21st century generation that has the will, the ways and the power to make a change. Let`s not wait for a pat on the back nor a “break a leg” cheer.

In conclusion, “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Let`s share art. We were all artists as kids, but will we take the challenge to re-find that part of ourselves?

There`s no such thing as a pipe dream. If we set and keep our eye on the ball -our goal- and if it is the right one, we can do it. We can finalize our project with a roaring success. Nothing in this world is a failure, but a lesson. Nobody can hold us down! Let`s take the world on!

Together we can change the world!

I tried to realize a collage that urges people to help the Planet. The collage has some pictures that show the people’s indifference to the environment. People should realize that only with love and respect for the environment we can live in harmony with it.

To be heard and listened I chose a motto: “Say YES to the PLANET, and NO to the POLLUTION.” I sincerely hope that this motto reaches the soul of everyone, therefore we can live happy, healthy and in peace with ourselves.
